The Bureau of Plant Industry-Guimaras National Crop Research Development and Production Support Center (BPI-Guimaras NCRDPSC) conducted training on mango processing on April 20-22, 2016 at Calaya, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras.

The 3-day training was attended by 31 participants, mostly women eager to gain knowledge and skills on mango processing, specifically on pickles, atsara, juice and dried mango production.

The training will not only equip the local women on how to produce different mango processed products but at the same time provide them additional source of income.  Moreover, it will also help address the lack of supply of mango processed products in the province of Guimaras.  It could be noted that Guimaras is known for its mangoes, both fresh and processed products.

The Bureau of Plant Industry – Guimaras National Crop Research, Development and Production Support Center (BPI-GNCRDPSC) conducted a consultation dialogue of mango stakeholders for good agricultural practices (GAP) adoption cum mango field day on April 14, 2016.  The activity was conducted to encourage mango growers, farmers and stakeholders to adopt the recommended good agricultural practices (GAP) on mango and apply for certification.  It also wanted to showcase the production of other high value crops including vegetables, herbs and spices.

Highlighted on the one-day activity were the ceremonial harvesting of mango, inauguration of newly renovated postharvest and processing laboratory, led by Assistant Secretary for Planning and Project Development and BPI OIC Director Paz Benavidez II.  The Center’s GAP production management system on mango was presented and a consultation dialogue with the farmers and stakeholders was held.

Provincial Board Member, Diosdado Gonzaga assured the local government’s unwavering support to the Center and its project most especially in improving and promoting Guimaras mangoes. Assistant Director for High Value Crop Development (HVCDP) Jennifer Remoquillo commended the growers for working so hard in producing world class mangoes. Department of Agriculture has put mango as one of the priority crops and it ensures that the value chain approach is being implemented, that necessary assistance are given to nurseries, growers, sellers and exporters. OIC Director Benavidez assured mango growers that the international market has opened its door for the Philippine fruits especially for the mangoes from Guimaras. Food Safety has become a global concern. She recommended that farmers observe Good Agricultural Practices and be certified subsequently.  This may become a compulsory requirement of the importing country soon. The growers must accept the challenges to sustain the increasing demand and be globally competitive. BPI is committed to support the development and promotion f DA-GAP Program.

Technology demonstration on matured technologies on mango (fertilization, pruning, proper harvesting and postharvest handling and hot water treatment), mango processing, mushroom production and herbs utilization were also conducted.

Moreover, planting materials in form of vegetables seeds and potted herbal plants were distributed to the participants.  A total of 100 mango growers, farmers, processors, women’s group and stakeholders benefitted on the said activity. (RS Orquia & LAEugenio)

 

The Crop Pest Management Division headed by its Chief Ms. Wilma R. Cuaterno conducted a training on PROTOCOL AND FIELD DATA GATHERING on April 4-8, 2016 at the Tropicana Suites Residence Hotel in Malate, Manila.  More than 50 men and women participated in the training from the Bureau of Plant Industry, DA-Regional Crop Protection Centers (RCPC) and DA-RFO Regulatory Divisions. The training aims to validate the agreed standard format on field monitoring for rice;  practice and evaluate the standard protocol for rice and lastly,  enhance the participants’ knowledge and skills in monitoring and field data gathering.   

A field trip was also conducted in a farm in San Rafael, Bulacan where participants gathered data and presented them after the trip. A standard format that would be used was discussed and agreed on for the evaluation of the monitoring and data analysis protocol on rice pest. Dr. Fe Dela Pena and Mr. Genaro Rillon, PhilRice Experts helped the participants reduce the form by advising them to concentrate on major insect pests and consider only the major problems and put a remark column should there be an incidence or observance of pests. Mr. Rillon advised to include recommendation and control strategies given. They also suggest to include cultural practices management history to determine interventions.

Pest monitoring format for corn was also tackled. The basic principle in monitoring was discussed by IPB-UPLB representative while Dr. Edwin Benigno lectured on the analysis of data. Dr. Jesus Binamira a CPMD consultant, suggested that the standard monitoring format to be developed should apply to all 8 priority crops (rice, corn, cassava, mango, pineapple, banana, coconut and rubber) major pests in the road map of crop protection.  

It was also emphasized that the role of the data gatherer is critical because monitoring the population is important. The farmers or data gatherer must be knowledgeable and are trained to correctly identify the pests. Their judgement must be consistent to ensure correct interventions and recommendation.   

The training which is set to standardize data gathering report to forecast pests and issue advisories and corresponding pest management was a very productive one. (LAEugenio/ Contributor: WR Cuaterno)
